I learned something the other day. Banana trees are actually … herbs. We’ll, technically because their stem does not contain any woody tissue. Also, did you know that after one bunch of bananas, you actually cut down the tree so that it can grow back and have more bunches? Anyway, I was surprised! 🙂
Lots of people in my area have bananas growing behind their homes. Here is a bunch which should be ready soon! Notice the flower just below.
Here you can see the owner cut them down after having their bunches ; only the last 16 inches or so remain from which a new stem will grow.
On the hurricane front, that tropical depression from my last post is now tropical storm Gustav and is expected to become hurricane Gustav tonight or tuesday. Unfortunately on the computer models below, some have it going below Cayman and some above. Lets just hope that they don’t average out and point towards here.
A final note. I implemented a while back a post notification function and though I would mention it again. If you sign up (click on “register” on the right) you will automatically receive an email each time I make a new post. I promise not to send you any spam or any other message ; I dislike spam as much as you!
PS : If anyone does not understand the title of this post (especially the French Canadian readers …) Herbie goes bananas is a childhood movie about a VW Beetle!
