Since Saturday 10am, we are now under a tropical storm watch. All forecasts seem to have the storm turn north after Haiti, but we don’t really trust them! I’ll be putting up the shutters tonight and we are making sure we have all we need for at least 2 days. The forecasts also have Fay turning into a Hurricane Category 1 sometime soon. We prefer to be safe than sorry.
Now for some fun stuff we did on Saturday afternoon. A friend of mine at the office told me about this place … amazing! Its basically a small lake and there are many iguanas that live on the shores and in the trees. When we got there, there was not too much to see. But after taking out some saltines (crackers/biscuits soda for the frenchies reading), the show really started. About 10-12 fairly large iguanas showed up for a snack.
Here is a Youtube video that summarizes the event. (lasts just under 2 minutes)
Here I am feeding them. I have heard of people who have been bitten by these guys, so we took the BBQ tong to give them the crackers! Smart move 🙂
Here is Julie having fun with two of them. I just had time to snap two pictures since she was a bit afraid of them!
We spent a good 10-15 minutes feeding them. More were arriving from the lake. (see the video if you have not already done so) It was great fun.
Upon leaving, they seemed disappointed that the party was over!

bwwahaha
that is such a funny video… those things move so fast..
i remember my friend had a pet iguana when we were younger and it would whip with its tail hard enough to cut your skin… ekk..
looks like fun… if you sat in a park in Ohio with crackers you would get mobbed by ducks and geese…
btw does this place have a name, id like to add it to the “places to vist ive read about in your blog” list.
Hi Michael,
Glad you liked the video/post! We had a great time. The lake is in the WestBay area … no name though. There are only a few lakes, so probably not too difficult to find and there are some areas where you can access without going onto private property.
Cheers

Hi Micho,
This is a great site, my wife and I were in the Cayman Islands islands in 2005 and will be back September 5-12. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the weather will be ok! I will be in the Bodden town area.
All the Best!
Nick
Hi Nick,
Thanks for your message and comments. I apprecete it. 🙂
The island has changed a lot since 2005. That was the year after Ivan (Sept 2004). You will notice that the trees/palms have all grown back. You will also notice many more condos on 7-mile beach and also new buildings in Georgetown.
Lets hope for great weather when you are here 🙂
Cheers
Micho
Hello Micho!
Your site has become my primary source about living in Cayman.
It is nice of you to post not only text, but pictures and even vedeos.
I might move to Cayman in an year or so and any info about living there is important for me.
You’ve been shoping around for a property. Could you tell me approximately how much is to rent a small house in a nice area with direct ocean view on Grand Cayman?
Thank you.
Hi,
Glad you like my site 🙂 Thanks
A single family house on the ocean will cost anywhere from 5000$+ USD/month if you are close to Georgetown, canal front or Seven mile beach area. If you are willing to forfeit the ocean but still live close to the beach (e.g: south sound), figure 3500$-4000$/month for a prime area. If you don’t live near the beach (e.g: Savannah, Bodden town), 2000-3500$ is a safe bet. Townhouses will be less per month. Anything on the ocean will be more expensive as will be anything in the seven mile beach area.
I recommend you look at the following sites:
http://www.caymannewresident.com/page_id_7.html
http://www.properties.ky/listings.php?type=2
http://www.century21cayman.com/files?NEWL=MR
Note for those sites: 1$US = 0.82$CI, so 1000$CI = 1219.50$US
Cheers 🙂
Micho
Thank you for the info, Micho!
The property is really pricy.
I’ll look at the links.
Hi again,
Cost of living is definitely high here! I suggest you read that whole site http://www.caymannewresident.com Other significant things to consider for living costs are utilities. For 2-3 people in a house, electricity will be on average around 350$/month (higher in summer, lower in winter) if you are very careful with use of the a/c. I have heard of electrical bills in the 800$’s and more… Also, water. Again, being careful (ie: short showers, not wash car too often, etc), for 2-3 people it will be around 75$/month for water.
Thank you, Micho!
I checked the site. It is really good.
So far I like those areas for living: Seven Mile Beach, West Bay and South Sound.
Do you have an opinion about those areas for living?
Seven-mile beach is where most expats live, but also the most expensive. Second most expensive area is south sound … you have expensive tastes! 😉 West-bay is about 15 mins to Georgetown by car and is more of a Caymanian area, although plenty of expats also live there. Rents will be more reasonable. I definitely suggest, if you can, come here for a week or so to see what area suits you best so once you get here for good you focus on the chosen area.
Micho
Truly, having expensive tastes is a story of my life. Although being able to maintain such tastes sometimes is hard.
I certainly will come for a week or so before I make my decision to movce there.
About West Bay being the Caymanian area…Is this a concern for expats? Do they mostly prefer to live in expats area?
Absolutely not! I live in an area with 90% + Caymanians and love it! IMO you feel like you are really living abroad. Like I say, come visit, that way you will really get a feel for each area.
Thank you, Micho!
“Being a expat in Cayman is an opportunity of a life time.”

This expression could be a motto for people aiming there…
