… well, not really!
Water temperature last summer in the ocean was +-87 degrees. Very warm. Now, in the middle of the winter, its +-80 degrees. Most people who will read this blog post will scoff at what I just wrote. Well, I can tell its colder by how my fellow divers are adapting. Last week-end, I was the only diver on the boat without a wetsuit. When someone asked me how come I was not wearing one, I instantly answered “I’m a Canadian”. The person (who was an American) seemed satisfied with my answer. 🙂
On one of my recent dives, I dove with very experienced diver (and a great chap) called Kelly! Of course he had a camera and took the following pictures. (Thanks)
Here is a large Moray eel we saw in a crevasse. It was probably 4-5ft long. It was about only 12-18 inches away when he took this picture. I wisely stayed back a bit further.

This cute guy, also a Moray eel, but spotted this time, was about the size of a hot dog sausage.

During our dive, a school of Horseye Jacks swam above of for a long time. It was a very graceful show. These fish are actually quite large, probably 16 inches long or so.

Near the end of our dive, we saw this: A lionfish. Beautiful! However, as I have discussed a few posts back, are an invasive species. This is only the second one I have seen. It was a large adult specimen.

No wetsuit!

Micho,
I always enjoy the pictures you post, excellent. Speaking of Canada and the cold I just flew from Laguardia airport to Myrtle Beach and let me say that it was quite a ride flying through a blizzard. I was on a 50 seat canadair jet and we were all over the sky, it’s great to be on the ground and in 60 degree weather!
Fun answer “I’m a Canadian”…
I went to Florida with my parents on a Christmas break. There was cold weather down there when we arrived, so my brother and I had a walk to a nearby bicycle shop. We were wearing T-shirts and shorts, it was around 70 degrees F. The guy in the shop was wearing a coat, gloves and a wool hat. He asked if we were cold, we said “We’re from Canada, we were at -30 degrees F yesterday”.
He looked satisfied by the answer, but I think he was suspicious about a temperature in negative numbers. 0 F is about -15C, so they never see that…
Nice pictures. Is it with a flash or natural light ? How deep ?
By the way, did you guys manage to capture the lionfish ?
@Yves
The pictures were taken between 80 and 50ft.
No flash.
For the Lionfish, we did not capture it. Neither of us were licensed (you need to follow a 1h class to be allowed) The dive masters could have, but they were no where near us when we saw it. We reported it to them when we got back to the boat and told them exactly where it was, so hopefully someone will catch it at a later dive.
