{"id":901,"date":"2009-04-01T05:52:07","date_gmt":"2009-04-01T10:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=901"},"modified":"2009-04-01T07:56:11","modified_gmt":"2009-04-01T12:56:11","slug":"electricity-in-cayman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=901","title":{"rendered":"Electricity in Cayman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Electricity in the Cayman Islands (and in most of the Caribbean) is very expensive.\u00a0 Most islands do not have rivers to turn turbines or the critical mass (or the will) to have coal or nuclear generators.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few weeks ago, a new promising technology was launched in Grand Cayman by our local utility, the Cayman Electric Company (CEC).<\/p>\n<p>The company expects 60% of homes in Grand Cayman will use this technology by 2012.\u00a0 Its not a new idea, but definitely a first on such a large scale. In a nutshell, its Pedal Power!\u00a0 CEC will install a home power generator that can be connected to any regular bicycle.\u00a0 According to the article I read in the local paper, the company estimates that &#8220;1h of cycling every day can reduce the average family&#8217;s bill by 30% and help &#8217;em lose some weight at the same time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a demo that was given last week by CEC at the George Town park by a local kid.\u00a0 He was &#8220;plugged&#8221; into a specially designed electrical panel to show just how much electricity pedal power can generate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-902\" title=\"riding_pedal_power_small-1\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/riding_pedal_power_small-1.jpg\" alt=\"riding_pedal_power_small-1\" width=\"480\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/riding_pedal_power_small-1.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/riding_pedal_power_small-1-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the <em>gizmo <\/em>that will be installed in homes (on the electrical box)\u00a0 The company says that it will take less than 30 minutes for the technicians to &#8220;patch&#8221; it into the homes electric box.\u00a0 Installation &amp; all equipment costs 200CI (about 250$US) for the setup.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-903\" title=\"voodoolabpedalpower2plusbig\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/voodoolabpedalpower2plusbig.jpg\" alt=\"voodoolabpedalpower2plusbig\" width=\"480\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/voodoolabpedalpower2plusbig.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/voodoolabpedalpower2plusbig-300x141.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Being the eco-friendly people we are, we signed up immediately for the program.\u00a0 Here I am testing it out with the portable generator &amp; the cord to plug into the electrical grid.\u00a0 Cant wait to see if next month&#8217;s bill will be lower. \u00a0 Not bad at all. It can be moved from room to room.
