{"id":3471,"date":"2017-09-11T21:17:16","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T02:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=3471"},"modified":"2024-11-18T09:22:16","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T14:22:16","slug":"hurricane-irma-update-3-and-final-thoughts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=3471","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Irma \u2013 update 3 and final thoughts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So Hurricane Irma is now in the history books and we will never see her again. \u00a0In fact, when a storm is catastrophic, the name is &#8220;retired&#8221; and will never be used again. \u00a0Hurricane Ivan and Katrina are good example of this. \u00a0Good riddance.<\/p>\n<p>So Irma caused major damage on, by my count, 8 nations\/states. \u00a0 Barbuda, Anguilla, BVI, USVI, Turks &amp; Caicos, Cuba &amp; Florida. \u00a0That is quite a destructive system, so many lives have been upended. \u00a0 A number of friends from BVI are in the process of leaving the island due to not having a place to live and some, who work in the tourism industry, simply have no work\/job since it will be months before tourists and hotels are able to welcome guests again. \u00a0In the TCI, where I &#8220;escaped&#8221; 24h before Irma, there are over 500 utility poles down on the island of Providenciales, so recovery will take a while. On the island of Grand Turk, sadly there is still almost no news 4 days after the storm. \u00a0It looks like Irma leveled all communications there.<\/p>\n<p>On that, here are some more wave videos from this week-end in Cayman. \u00a0On Sunday, the waves were spectacular. \u00a0I felt lucky that was all we got and that I got out before the storm in TCI, all while thinking of my friends who were not so lucky.<\/p>\n<p>Here was the scene in West Bay at &#8220;Macabuca&#8221; &#8211; always a favorite to see big waves.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ID5ybgqKsZo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This one is from Smith Cove. \u00a0I had never seen such big waves at this location.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oPkUPhyBYoo?ecver=1\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nSo that was Irma. \u00a0 Lets hope the rest of the 2017 hurricane season is quiet. \u00a0The statistical peak of the season was &#8230; yesterday Sept 10th.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So Hurricane Irma is now in the history books and we will never see her again. \u00a0In fact, when a storm is catastrophic, the name is &#8220;retired&#8221; and will never be used again. \u00a0Hurricane Ivan and Katrina are good example of this. \u00a0Good riddance.
