{"id":3026,"date":"2015-10-25T06:01:01","date_gmt":"2015-10-25T11:01:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=3026"},"modified":"2015-10-25T06:01:01","modified_gmt":"2015-10-25T11:01:01","slug":"trip-to-amsterdam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=3026","title":{"rendered":"Trip to Amsterdam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently had the opportunity to go to Amsterdam for business. \u00a0Amsterdam is a city I had never visited and was quite pleased to be able to go to. \u00a0Now that I have been, I can say its a great place to visit; very &#8220;Old Europe&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what would be a view you would expect from Amsterdam and can see plenty of. \u00a0Canals and bridges. \u00a0Lots of this to be seen. \u00a0I was glad I did not have nor need a car. \u00a0I am usually quite good with navigation, but during the few taxi trips I took, I found the streets to be very confusing. \u00a0Also, streets are very narrow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0980.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3027\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0980.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0980\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0980.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0980-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My first sightseeing stop was the Anne Frank House. As someone who is very interested in history and WWII, this was No. 1 on my list of places to see. \u00a0I very much enjoyed my visit. \u00a0I found that the museum does a good job putting us in the context of what happened and how Anne Frank and her family were hiding. \u00a0 The actual house is the one which is center- left, with\u00a0the black bottom level. The two to the right are part of the museum. \u00a0Note the queue to enter the museum. I waited 45 minutes ; apparently that was a fairly short wait since lines can be very long some days.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0986.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3028\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0986.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0986\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0986.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0986-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the bookshelf that hid the entrance to the &#8220;Annex&#8221; where Anne Frank and her family were hiding. \u00a0Photography was restricted in most parts, so no other pictures.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3034\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0985.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0985\" width=\"360\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0985.jpg 360w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0985-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One evening, I was invited for\u00a0a river cruise\/dinner. \u00a0Below is the boat we took. \u00a0Note the very low profile of the boat. \u00a0The bridges have very little clearance, so the boats need to be very low. \u00a0On a few occasions, I wondered if we would not hit the bridge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1000.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3029\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1000.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1000\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1000.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1000-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the see-through roof of the boat &#8211; this is how close we were to buildings and the side. Very tight fit. The cruise also included a meal and lasted about 2h &#8211; very nice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3030\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1009.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1009\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1009.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1009-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another nice visit, was to the founding place of Heineken &#8211; the world famous beer. \u00a0One nice thing about Amsterdam, is that many of the top things to see\/visit are either walking distance or a short taxi ride away.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3031\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1017.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1017\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1017.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1017-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are some old &amp; decommissioned, yet still spectacular brewing vats. \u00a0The overall visit of Heineken takes about 1h and is very worth while, even if you are not a fan of beer. \u00a0Each ticket includes 2-beers at the end. \u00a0Since I was alone and it was early morning, I decided that drinking alone was kind of strange. \u00a0To remediate, I started chatting with a lovely couple from Manchester, UK. \u00a0 Problem solved \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3035\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1019.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1019\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1019.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1019-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The infamous &#8220;Coffee Shops&#8221; of Amsterdam. \u00a0For those of you who don&#8217;t, know, the licensed Coffee shops are\u00a0where one can legally get some cannabis. \u00a0 There are lots around and when walking by, the strong odor is a give-away of whats going on in there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1031.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3032\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1031.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1031\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1031.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1031-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is a definite culture around the cannabis, since you can find all kinds of products made of cannabis. Here is a great example. \u00a0For those of you wondering &#8230; its no! \u00a0I don&#8217;t smoke cigarette, so whats the point? \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG-20151022-01045.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-3038\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG-20151022-01045.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-20151022-01045\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG-20151022-01045.jpg 640w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG-20151022-01045-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One thing I found interesting about Amsterdam is how many electric cars are present, especially the lovely (and very expensive) Tesla model S as below. \u00a0Last time I checked these were over 100,000$US each. \u00a0However, plenty of taxi&#8217;s and regular folks drive these. \u00a0I was told that the Dutch government offers large tax incentives for the use of electric cars, which likely explains their popularity, not to mention no need to buy gas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1036.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3033\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1036.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1036\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1036.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1036-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So there you have it, Amsterdam in a few pictures.
