{"id":2925,"date":"2015-05-27T21:09:47","date_gmt":"2015-05-28T02:09:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=2925"},"modified":"2015-05-27T21:09:47","modified_gmt":"2015-05-28T02:09:47","slug":"national-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=2925","title":{"rendered":"National Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently went to visit the National Museum of the Cayman Islands. \u00a0As a true local, I had often driven and even walked right by but had never gone in. \u00a0 As you will see in this post, I found it to be a lovely visit and very worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>The Museum is in George Town, right at the harbor front in this building, which is the oldest public building in the Cayman Islands. It was built in the early 1800&#8217;s and at one point or another was a court house, jail and Post Office.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00354.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2933\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00354.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-20150518-00354\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00354.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00354-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you may imagine, the National Museum is likely about the history of the Cayman Islands ; you would be correct. \u00a0The displays cover a variety of themes. From the discovery, the traditions (e.g: fishing), key political events, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Here we have a large display detailing all the key dates in the history of the Islands up to the current period.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00350.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2931\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00350.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-20150518-00350\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00350.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00350-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This display, which was nicely done, showed us the mangrove habitat that can be found in many areas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00349.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2930\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00349.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-20150518-00349\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00349.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00349-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00340.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2927\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00340.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-20150518-00340\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00340.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00340-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bird on the 1c coin. \u00a0Unfortunately, as the display explains, the Old Truss is extinct and now only exists on the coin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2932\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00351.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-20150518-00351\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00351.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00351-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This display was of a &#8220;talking man&#8221; about the &#8217;32 hurricane and fishing\/turtling. \u00a0It was quite realistic and nicely\u00a0done.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00342.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2928\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00342.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-20150518-00342\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00342.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG-20150518-00342-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I spent about 90 minutes inside. \u00a0There is lots to see and read. I enjoy history, so took my time to check out each of the displays. \u00a0I suspect 1h would be enough for most people. \u00a0Museum hours and information can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museum.ky\">www.museum.ky<\/a>\u00a0 If you are in George Town on a rainy day this could also be a welcome\u00a0pause from the rain. Entry fee is very reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>On the &#8220;outside&#8221; front, it is Mango season in the Cayman Islands. \u00a0I raided a friends tree &#8211; sooooo good.
