{"id":2446,"date":"2013-07-25T18:25:20","date_gmt":"2013-07-25T23:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=2446"},"modified":"2013-07-25T18:25:20","modified_gmt":"2013-07-25T23:25:20","slug":"uboat-sighting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=2446","title":{"rendered":"Uboat sighting!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week there was a really interesting article in our local paper. \u00a0It turns out that during WWII there was some action in the Caribbean ; who knew! \u00a0As you saw from my post in France, the whole WWII thing is of great interest to me, mainly because of my family&#8217;s involvement in it (amongst other things my grandfather was a bomber pilot for the RAF)<\/p>\n<p>So back to the local aspect. \u00a0 It seems the the Germans sent Uboats (submarines) all the way to the Caribbean to patrol and sink merchant ships likely destined for the UK. \u00a0I honestly had no idea they came this far south. \u00a0So how is this relevant to Cayman?<\/p>\n<p>Well just this week in downtown George Town, they installed a refurbished Uboat lookout post. You can see it here below. \u00a0When I went to check it out, there was a local TV crew making a report about it. \u00a0It is located at &#8220;Fort George&#8221;. \u00a0This hut, was perched up about that high and was manned with individuals on the looking for uboat periscopes off the coast. \u00a0My understanding is that none were ever seen directly off Grand Cayman.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_4049.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2447\" alt=\"IMG_4049\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_4049.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_4049.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/IMG_4049-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is a bit more information. \u00a0Interesting stuff.
