{"id":1873,"date":"2011-12-04T15:57:47","date_gmt":"2011-12-04T20:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=1873"},"modified":"2011-12-05T07:18:02","modified_gmt":"2011-12-05T12:18:02","slug":"cayman-islands-marathon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=1873","title":{"rendered":"Cayman Islands Marathon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning I had the privilege to run in the annual Cayman Islands Marathon &#8230; in fact I ran the 1\/2 marathon (13.1 miles\/21.1 km) ; my first one ever.<\/p>\n<p>Although I cannot compare, I have to say that this event was really well organized!\u00a0 The Cayman Islands marathon has been running (pun intended) since 2002.\u00a0 This year, over 1000 runners (all categories &#8211; full marathon, half marathon and 4-team relay) took part ; a record for the event.<\/p>\n<p>The course starts right downtown George Town at the Waterfront (top left of picture below). Then takes the runners south, along South Church Street though South Sound all the way to Prospect.\u00a0 At Prospect we turn around at the half way mark and do +-7km along the same route before heading north on Walkers Road, into town and to the finish line.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/2010-course.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1874\" title=\"2010 course\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/2010-course.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/2010-course.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/2010-course-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another view per the upload from my GPS running watch after the run.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/cayman_half_run.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1877\" title=\"cayman_half_run\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/cayman_half_run.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/cayman_half_run.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/cayman_half_run-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To help us beat the Cayman heat, the race started at 5am!\u00a0 That may seem early, but its a brilliant idea.\u00a0 Quick 1\/2 marathoners can finish the race right around sunrise while the full marathoners only have to cope with &lt;2h of sun out of their race if they are fast enough.<\/p>\n<p>For time tracking, all runners are issued a &#8220;chip&#8221; as seen below. (407 was by bib number)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0936.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1878\" title=\"IMG_0936\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0936.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0936.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0936-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is about the size of a bottle cap and you integrate it to you shoe laces so not to lose it.\u00a0\u00a0 When passing though the start and finish lines, there are sensors that detect the chip and the total running time.\u00a0 Quite nifty and reduces the likelihood of an error if someone were to manually take the time when runners arrive at the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the finish line.\u00a0 Lots of people cheering on the runners ; it was great.\u00a0 Along the route, at the water stations, the volunteers also did a great job cheering us on and always had plenty of water and <em>Gatorade<\/em> on hand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0941.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1879\" title=\"IMG_0941\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0941.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0941.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0941-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is my good friend (and office mate) Beth.\u00a0 She won the women&#8217;s full marathon for the 4th time (not a typo) in a row.\u00a0\u00a0 A true force of nature. The following woman came in over 15 minutes later, which makes her win even more impressive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0942.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1880\" title=\"IMG_0942\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0942.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0942.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0942-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So how did I do?\u00a0 Well, here is the medal all the finishers get ; very nice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0946.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1881\" title=\"IMG_0946\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0946.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0946.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/IMG_0946-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I finished the half marathon in 1h41:44 &#8211; I am very pleased.\u00a0 That places me 27th in a field of 520 half marathon runners.\u00a0 Not bad for a guy who only started to run 5 months ago!<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, to all my runner friends and anyone out there reading this who would like to run with us, I highly recommend you consider coming to Grand Cayman in 2012 for the marathon which is always held the first Sunday of December.\u00a0 The run in the dark is fun and definitely different, the atmosphere is friendly and the whole organization makes this a very pleasant event.\u00a0 Not to mention early December is a great time to escape the cold if you are from the USA or Canada \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning I had the privilege to run in the annual Cayman Islands Marathon &#8230; in fact I ran the 1\/2 marathon (13.1 miles\/21.1 km) ; my first one ever.
