{"id":1525,"date":"2011-01-30T17:38:15","date_gmt":"2011-01-30T22:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=1525"},"modified":"2011-01-30T17:38:15","modified_gmt":"2011-01-30T22:38:15","slug":"mojave-desert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/?p=1525","title":{"rendered":"Mojave desert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Been travelling lots &#8230; next post is about Cayman, I promise!<\/p>\n<p>So I was in Los Angeles for business and in the past trips did all of the &#8220;standard&#8221; LA stuff such as Disney, Hollywood, etc.\u00a0\u00a0 Since I had a day to kill, I decided to go out for a drive to the Mojave desert.\u00a0\u00a0 What a great day it was.<\/p>\n<p>First off, out from Grand Cayman.\u00a0 An unusual flight path, taking off towards the West and banking over Seven Mile Beach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0113.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1526\" title=\"IMG_0113\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0113.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0113-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Close to the LA airport (LAX), I saw this.\u00a0\u00a0 Fans of CSI: Miami will recognize this building.\u00a0 So the Miami-Dade police station is not in Miami! Well, movie buffs should already have picked up on this.\u00a0 It was the subject of the 2000 movie &#8220;Erin Brockovich&#8221;.\u00a0 This city&#8217;s water was contaminated by a company.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0147.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1531\" title=\"IMG_0147\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0147.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0147-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I was about to take the exit to go North\/West, I saw this.\u00a0\u00a0 I seriously considered it.\u00a0\u00a0 Las Vegas was only 150 miles away at that point.\u00a0 Maybe next year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0146.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1532\" title=\"IMG_0146\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0146.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0146-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next stop: Edwards Air Force base.\u00a0 There is a large B-52 bomber on display.\u00a0 Very impressive.\u00a0 In the foreground, my lovely rental Volvo C30; great car for a road trip like this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0158.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1533\" title=\"IMG_0158\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0158.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0158-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>N<span style=\"color: #000000;\">ext up, the Mojave air and space port.\u00a0 This is the place where they store old aircraft (like Victorville) but is also the base for many space projects such as Richard Branson&#8217;s Virgin Galactic.\u00a0 A tour of the premises are available, but you unfortunately are not able to take any pictures during the tour of the hangars and old aircraft.<\/span> The tour is in an econoline type van and the guy who does the tour is the guy who refuels the planes. On that basis, no reservations are possible.\u00a0 So if he is out refueling a plane,\u00a0  you are essentially out of luck.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the link for visits if anyone interested.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mojaveairport.com\/visits.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.mojaveairport.com\/visits.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In  the boneyard section (where planes will never fly again and are usually sold for part), lots of Hollywood history.  That white tail  section just behind the red &#8220;wind direction&#8221; thing on the left is the Oceanic plane  from Lost.  In there there is the 747 used in &#8220;24&#8221; for when the President  was shot down. There is also an old Delta plane with a big hole where  the Mythbuster guys did the shoebomb test, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0166.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1535\" title=\"IMG_0166\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0166.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0166.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0166-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is the storage section ; aircraft that could technically be brought back into service.\u00a0 The airlines basically put them here during the recession when they have too many airplanes. The  black tailed aircraft are all Air Canada 767&#8217;s.   The second one from  the right is the infamous &#8220;Gimli Glider&#8221; for any airplane buffs reading this blog. However, out of  the 7, a few of them look in pretty rough shape so I suspect that Air Canada will sell these for parts of they will become beer cans at some point \ud83d\ude42 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0164.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1534\" title=\"IMG_0164\" src=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0164.jpg 480w, https:\/\/micho.org\/cayblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_0164-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Last stop &#8230; Palmdale airport<acronym title=\"Palmdale - Production Flight Test Installation AF Plant 42 (PMD \/ KPMD), USA - California\"><\/acronym>.   I had not planned this stop , but Ron, my &#8220;guide&#8221;  at Mojave  suggested I go.
